• Academy Student

Overview Academy Students (忍者学校生, Akademī-sei) are the student body of the academy, which is where they prepare for their life as Shinobi and where the weak ones are weeded out. Academy Students aren’t part of the actual Shinobi forces of a Hidden Village because they are still mastering the basics of what the Ninja life style they hope to take on. They are not actually part of the Shinobi forces of a village, but are capable of being conscripted during a war as part of an emergency.

As students of the Shinobi Academy of their respective villages, Academy Students are generally E-Rank, with Advanced Academy Students capable of being D-Rank or C-Rank Shinobi (these ranks must be earnt IC’ly, separately of their shinobi ranks) and as such spend the majority of their time honing their skills to pass the assorted tests and exams that they have. They are taught ordinary school subjects such as history and mathematics, but are also taught the basics of Shinobi life like Ninjutsu, Taijutsu, and Genjutsu. This includes lessons about chakra and how to control it, hand seals, tactics, and the handling of Shinobi weapons, such as Kunai and Shuriken, and how to throw and wield them. They are regularly trained as both individuals and as teams.

In time the Academy students of their village are made to take an exam first at the academy and then with their Jonin sensei so that they may be capable of becoming Genin. The first test does not grant them Genin, but instead their Jonin decide if they have passed their test, however the first does give them a forehead protector. The Academy Students who fail any of these tests are sent back to the academy, and with tests differing from village to village the ways to achieve this can be drastically different.

• Genin: Genin (下忍) are Ninja are their lowest rank, and also seem to show the most difference between individuals regarding power levels. Once becoming a Genin Shinobi will finally begin to do something for their village economy by being sent on missions that they are paid for. Most are sent on D-Rank missions, but at times they may be sent on C-Rank missions - these C-Rank missions being a cut above so that they may finally achieve doing “real” ninja work with a low possibility of risk to the Shinobi involved. In special circumstances villages may send Genin on higher rank missions, such as when they are lacking in powerful Shinobi.

Genin are normally put in a four man cell, or squad, which composes of three Genin and a sensei that is either a very powerful Chuunin, or a SP. Jonin, or Jonin so that they can learn teamwork and experience the Shinobi life under both the supervision and protection of a higher ranked Shinobi. These teams are generally arranged based on the skills that the individual Genin have so that they can be in a balanced team, and balance can be obtained throughout the village. After finishing the Chunin exam, a string of difficult tasks that test a Genin’s skill, they become Chunin but before that they generally improve themselves before taking the test and taking on harder missions.

• Chunin: Chunin (中忍), also known as Middle Ninja or Journeyman Ninja, are the Shinobi who have been made capable of guiding others and leading missions. Chunin have a level of maturity and power that gives them the ability to make use of leadership skills and tactical prowess. Those who do not have the capacity to become Chunin are normally Genin who get weeded out during the Chunin exam. Some move to function as as Academy Instructors, while others lead as team leaders of either Genin, and in the case of those that are highly skilled, Chunin to command the Shinobi that they have to maximum effect. Chunin are normally sent on C-Rank or B-Rank missions.

For one to become a Chunin a Genin has to participate in a large examination known as the “Chunin Exams”. The exams generally take place in one village and are seen as a way for villages to indirectly oppress the economies of others, for when their Chunin succeed they will end up with more requests for missions. These three-stage exams are vicious, and people regularly die in them, but depending on the village a Kage may forego these for more… rigorous trials, to weed out a weaker generation or to make sure that the current generation is the strongest.
